Carefully consider the best suitcase for your trip, taking into consideration how long you are going, where you are going and what features the suitcase has ie. expandable, additional compartments, wheel types, soft or hard shell etc. 

Keep your suitcase tidy and save space by using packing cubes (particularly compression ones). These allow you to separate your clothes by type, weather, or section of a trip while keep other items in place.  They also make unpacking easy. 

Keep heavier items such as shoes, books, toiletries etc. at the base of your suitcase to help stabalise the suitcase and make it easier to roll without tipping over. This also helps to minimise other items getting squished.

Roling your clothes saves space for lightweight items and can decrease creases if rolled tight enough.

Put shoes in reusable nylon bags so that the dirty soles don't soil the rest of the items in your suitcase.

To protect against any liquids spilling in your bags ensure toiletries are sealed by placing in toiletry bags, zip-lock backs or waterproof bags. 

If you are taking jewelry on your cruise and don't want a mess of necklaces to unravel get a flat jewelry case to ensure items remain untangled. 

Maximise space by wearing bulkier items such as jackets, shoes and scarfs. 

If you intend to do shopping on your trip then make sure you save space in your suitcase to bring back any items or gifts. Otherwise take a reusable folding back for those extra items on the way home.  

Airlines have strict luggage weight limits, minimise  excess baggage fees by investing in travel scales to measure your bags at home. These are also small and easy to take with you to make sure any shopping doesn't put you over the bag limit on the way home.

Always pack essential items and valuables such as travel documents, medication and electronics in carry-on. It can also be handy to take a change of clothes and some toiletries as well just in case there are any issues with getting your luggage.
